Spikys are essentially a highly effective finger massager.
They are great for soothing sore fingers after a hard crimpy session down the wall or a fingerboard session. Not only that, they are also brilliant for warming up as the massaging motion encourages blood flow to the area. Though I would always recommend caution with any serious finger injury, I have been amazed at how 10 mins massage with one of these can treat a slight tweak after a wall / fingerboard session.
Being a musical household, we have also found them great for warming up and improving dexterity before playing guitar / piano.
When I was first testing these out, I walked into Shaftoe using the ring as I walked and by the time I got to the crag my fingers were full of pumping blood, ready to climb, meaning no wasted power or skin warming them up! Anecdotally, I have found combining the massage with a light walk to produce similar (though not scientifically measured!) results to the Lewis reaction as described in Dave McLeod’s article on finger injuries.
They are on sale now from Durham Climbing Centre ,The Climbing Works, Climb Newcastle and Newcastle Climbing Centre. I can also sell them direct for £4, from my web shop… Please Get in touch if you would like to buy one or perhaps many of them!
